Feature proposal: add automatic numbering to Part components
This feature proposal, suggested by the editors at University of California Press, is to add automatic numbering for Part components. The part numbering would act just like the chapter numbering does now. Doing so would prevent the need to add a Part Number style into the editor, as well as keep the numbering interface consistent.
Currently, Chapter components in the Book Builder get automatic numbering assigned to them, starting with the first chapter of the body division. The chapter number appears in two places:
- On the Book Builder screen, in line with the chapter title:
- In the editor, as uneditable text at the very top of the chapter:
Parts do not currently affect the chapter numbering in any way (e.g. Part 1, Chapter 1, Chapter 2, Part 2, Chapter 3, etc.).
The simplest starting point for Part numbering, would be to implement it the same way:
- Display the part number inline before the component title on the Book Builder interface
- Display the part number at the top of the editor, as uneditable text: "Part 1", "Part 2"
- Part numbering should remain independent of the chapter numbering
This change would make the part numbering consistent with how chapters are numbered (plain text part numbering vs. automatic chapter numbering). It would also mean we might not need a "Part number" style.
One suggestion was to format the part numbers in the Book Builder differently than the chapter numbers (spell the words out, roman numerals, etc.) to help visually differentiate the parts from the chapters. However, the indent has been increased between part and chapter components (see #171 (closed) - coming soon), which should make a big difference. Starting with arabic numerals (plain old numbers) is the easiest implementation. How part numbers get formatted in the paginated book can be controlled with CSS.
