Indicate which item types are recommended for summative assessment

Context

  • Some items types are not good for summative assessment but they have been included in the assessment builder because faculty already create these items/are familiar with these items.
  • so we need to differentiate between item types that are suitable for formative (low stakes, no course grade associated) vs summative assessment. This must be clear to user creating the question and the person browsing published questions
  • Text can be provided (e.g. on the about page) that explains this difference, but users need some visual cue for the item types.

Item groupings

Recommended (summative assessments):

  • Multiple Answers
  • Multiple Choice
  • Multiple True/False
  • Matching
  • Numeral Answer
  • Essay

formative only:

  • Multiple dropdowns
  • Fill in the Blank
  • True/False

Proposal

  • One option: identify the items types by formative or summative in the data model and show this with the "item type" selection on the metadata form and filters on Browse items

Design

We could use Ant's cascading menu as done for the Bloom's dropdown
