Show changes/Hide changes button labels unclear
There is a mismatch between what the show/hide changes says and what the editors would expect:
- When track changes are showing, the show/hide track changes button says "Show changes"
- When track changes are hidden, the button says "Hide changes"
This is somewhat misleading: I'd expect a button that says "Show changes" to turn showing changes on. But "Show changes" is only visible when showing changes is already on. The converse is true for "Hide changes": I would expect that to turn showing track changes off.
So there's confusion about whether this button text reflects the current track changes visibility state, or what will happen when you click the button. The text should be updated to reflect one or the other:
- Display what will happen when the button is clicked: by reversing the display text with each state, e.g. when track changes is showing, the button displays "Hide changes", and when track changes is not showing, the button reads "Show changes"
- Display the current track change visibility state: When changes are showing, display "Showing changes"; when track changes are hidden, display "Hiding changes"
My strong preference is #1 (closed), as I think it's clearer, and the button is labeled with a standard description of what it will do when clicked.
