Add highlighter tool to the editor
The editors would like a text highlighting tool for Editoria.
One use case that Juliana, the copyeditor, shared is that she uses highlighting to mark words or phrases the author has used too much:
Author: please replace one of the highlighted "turn"s with another word
A highlighter icon should be added to the top formatting toolbar. The button should function a lot like the italic, subscript, and superscript buttons:
- Select some text in the main editor
- Click the highlighter icon to apply highlighting
When no text is selected, the icon should be inactive (probably greyed out). When text is selected, the icon should become active and clickable.
The editor should support 3 different highlighting colors. Users should be able to switch between them to leave different colored highlights. The requested colors were:
- Yellow
- Bright green
- Light blue
although these colors were chosen quickly and could change. The editors were thinking about bright, neon highlighter colors that really stand out, just like pen highlights. Text with highlighting should still be easy to read.
Designing a way for the user to change the highlighting color could add a wrinkle to the interface above. The user should not have to specify a color each and every time they apply highlighting. Unless the user is actively changing the highlight color, the interface should be 1) select text in the editor, and 2) apply highlighting with one click on the highlighting button. Eventually there should be a keyboard shortcut for applying highlighting.
